Bhawani Prasad Mishra possessed a poetic voice that felt less like literature and more like a quiet conversation with a wise friend. Born in 1913 in the Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, he chose to write with such absolute linguistic simplicity that his verses could be understood by a scholar and a farmer alike.
He was a committed Gandhian who lived his philosophy, dedicating much of his life to education and the constructive programs of the independence movement. Mishra famously declared that a poet must write in the exact language that he speaks.
Collections like Buni Hui Rassi, which earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972, and the iconic poem Geetfarosh, capture the compromises and quiet endurance of everyday life with deep warmth. He wrote hundreds of poems espousing Gandhian values, rejecting the artificial complexities that often distanced modern poetry from the masses.
When he passed away in 1985, he left behind a legacy of absolute authenticity. He proved that poetry does not need to shout to be heard; it only needs to tell the truth.
