Historical context

In the climactic buildup to the Yuddhakanda of the Ramayana, Lord Rama reaches the shores of the vast ocean, seeking a passage for his army to reach Lanka. When the ocean god remains silent to his entreaties, Rama, overcome by divine indignation, takes up his bow to dry up the very waters that defy his path. Seeing the impending destruction of the aquatic world, Varuna, the Lord of the Oceans, emerges in terror and humility to seek refuge and forgiveness at the feet of the righteous prince. This painting captures that fleeting, breathless moment of cosmic tension, where the wrath of the divine meets the humbling power of submission.
