Kaikeyi and Manthara
This poignant chromolithograph captures the fateful turning point in the Ramayana, where the maidservant Manthara whispers poison into the mind of Queen Kaikeyi. Within the opulent yet stifling chambers of the palace in Ayodhya, the drama of destiny unfolds. Manthara leans forward with urgent, cunning gestures, her face etched with malice and scheming ambition. Across from her, Queen Kaikeyi stands adorned in rich garments, holding a pearl necklace, momentarily caught between her natural grace and the insidious persuasion that will soon alter the course of empires. B. P. Banerjee masterfully translates this timeless literary tragedy into a visual masterpiece, reflecting the moral complexities and emotional depths of Indian epic mythology.
