फिर तेजी से तूफ़ान का झोंका आया और सड़क के किनारे खड़े सिर्फ एक पेड़ को हिला गया शेष पेड़ गुमसुम देखते रहे उनमें कोई हरकत नहीं हुई। जब एक पेड़ झूम-झूम कर निढाल हो गया पत्तियाँ गिर गयीं टहनियाँ टूट गयीं तना ऐंचा हो गया तब हवा आगे बढ़ी उसने सड़क के किनारे दूसरे पेड़ को हिलाया शेष पेड़ गुमसुम देखते रहे उनमें कोई हरकत नहीं हुई। इस नगर में लोग या तो पागलों की तरह उत्तेजित होते हैं या दुबक कर गुमसुम हो जाते हैं। जब वे गुमसुम होते हैं तब अकेले होते हैं लेकिन जब उत्तेजित होते हैं तब और भी अकेले हो जाते हैं।
