Sairandhri

In this emotionally charged masterpiece, Raja Ravi Varma brings to life a heart-wrenching episode from the Mahabharata, during the Pandavas' concealed exile in the kingdom of Virata. Draupadi, disguised as the royal maidservant Sairandhri, descends the palace steps with a heavy heart, weeping softly into her garment while bearing an offering. Her quiet grief is witnessed by Kichaka, the powerful commander-in-chief whose unwanted advances will soon threaten her honor and set the stage for righteous retribution. Varma brilliantly marries European academic realism with classical Indian storytelling, endowing the figures with tangible breath, palpable sorrow, and deep psychological resonance.
