Paired Painting
Shree Sheshashai
This sacred lithograph captures the profound cosmic moment of Lord Vishnu resting upon the serpent Shesha amidst the endless waters of the milky ocean. Known as Sheshashai, this image represents the divine slumber of the preserver of the universe, accompanied by Goddess Lakshmi who sits at his feet, and surrounding celestial beings. The scene is permeated with a sense of eternal peace and spiritual preservation. It served as a vital visual aid for daily devotional practices, reminding devotees of the cycle of cosmic time and the constant protection offered by the divine. The craftsmanship reflects the early twentieth century shift toward mass produced religious art, which brought the intimate presence of the gods into the homes of ordinary families.
