अब आधा जल निश्चल, पीला,-- आधा जल चंचल औ’, नीला-- गीले तन पर मृदु संध्यातप सिमटा रेशम पट सा ढीला। ... ... ... ... ऐसे सोने के साँझ प्रात, ऐसे चाँदी के दिवस रात, ले जाती बहा कहाँ गंगा जीवन के युग क्षण,-- किसे ज्ञात!
विश्रुत हिम पर्वत से निर्गत, किरणोज्वल चल कल ऊर्मि निरत, यमुना, गोमती आदी से मिल होती यह सागर में परिणत।
यह भौगोलिक गंगा परिचित, जिसके तट पर बहु नगर प्रथित, इस जड़ गंगा से मिली हुई जन गंगा एक और जीवित!
वह विष्णुपदी, शिव मौलि स्रुता, वह भीष्म प्रसू औ’ जह्नु सुता, वह देव निम्नगा, स्वर्गंगा, वह सगर पुत्र तारिणी श्रुता।
वह गंगा, यह केवल छाया, वह लोक चेतना, यह माया, वह आत्म वाहिनी ज्योति सरी, यह भू पतिता, कंचुक काया।
वह गंगा जन मन से नि:सृत, जिसमें बहु बुदबुद युग नर्तित, वह आज तरंगित, संसृति के मृत सैकत को करने प्लावित।
दिशि दिशि का जन मत वाहित कर, वह बनी अकूल अतल सागर, भर देगी दिशि पल पुलिनों में वह नव नव जीवन की मृद् उर्वर! ... ... ... ... ... अब नभ पर रेखा शशि शोभित, गंगा का जल श्यामल, कम्पित, लहरों पर चाँदी की किरणें करतीं प्रकाशमय कुछ अंकित!
