मेरा एक जीवन है उसमें मेरे प्रिय हैं, मेरे हितैषी हैं, मेरे गुरुजन हैं उसमें कोई मेरा अनन्यतम भी है
पर मेरा एक और जीवन है जिसमें मैं अकेला हूँ जिस नगर के गलियारों, फुटपाथ, मैदानों में घूमा हूँ हँसा खेला हूँ उसके अनेक हैं नागर, सेठ, म्युनिस्पलम कमिश्नर, नेता और सैलानी, शतरंजबाज और आवारे पर मैं इस हाहाहूती नगरी में अकेला हूँ।
देह पर जो लता सी लिपटी आँखों में जिसनें कामना से निहारा दुख में जो साथ आये अपने वक्त पर जिन्होंने पुकारा जिनके विश्वास पर वचन दिये, पालन किया जिनका अंतरंग हो कर उनके किसी भी क्षण में मैं जिया
वे सब सुहृद है, सर्वत्र हैं, सर्वदा हैं पर मैं अकेला हूँ।
सारे संसार में फैल जायेगा एक दिन मेरा संसार सभी मुझे करेंगे-दो चार को छोड़-कभी न कभी प्यार मेरे सृजन, कर्म-कर्तव्य, मेरे आश्वासन, मेरी स्थापनायें और मेरे उपार्जन, दान-व्यय, मेरे उधार एक दिन मेरे जीवन को छा लेंगे- ये मेरे महत्व। डूब जायेगा तंत्रीनाद कवित्त रस में, राग में रंग में मेरा यह ममत्व जिससे मैं जीवित हूँ। मुझ परितप्त को तब आ कर वरेगी मृत्यु - मैं प्रतिकृत हूँ।
पर मैं फिर भी जियुँगा इसी नगरी में रहूँगा रूखी रोटी खाउँगा और ठंड़ा पानी पियूँगा क्योंकि मेरा एक और जीवन है और उसमें मैं अकेला हूँ।
