Shivaji and Subedar's Daughter
This profound work depicts one of the most celebrated moral episodes in Maratha history, illustrating the legendary chivalry of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Following a successful campaign, the daughter of the defeated Subedar of Kalyan was brought before Shivaji. Instead of treating her as a prisoner, the great king greeted her with the respect due to a daughter, famously remarking that he wished his own mother had been as beautiful so that he himself might have been born more handsome. In this poignant scene, the artist captures the moment of supreme grace, where the king acknowledges the dignity of his guest while the Subedar stands in humble reverence. It serves as a timeless testament to the king's commitment to righteousness, or Dharma, during the volatility of war.
