ये पहाड़ों की ढलान से आहिस्ता-आहिस्ता उतरनेवाले तराई के रास्ते पाँव-पैदल चल कर आनेवाले पुराने व्यापारी नहीं हैं
ये इमली के पेड़ के नीचे नहीं सुस्ताते अमराई में डेरा नहीं डालते काँख में तराजू दबाए नहीं चलते
ये नमक के सौदागर नहीं हैं लहसुन-प्याज के विक्रेता नहीं हैं सरसों तेल की शीशियाँ नहीं हैं इनके झोले में
इन्हें सखुए के बीज नहीं पूरा जंगल चाहिए हड़िया के लिए भात नहीं सारा खेत चाहिए
ये नए युग के सौदागर हैं हमारी भाषा नहीं सीखते कुछ भी नहीं है समझाने और बताने के लिए ये सिर्फ़ आदेश देना चाहते हैं इनके पास ठस-ठस आवाज़ करनेवाली क्योंझर की बंदूकें नहीं हैं सफ़ेद घोड़े नहीं हैं नहीं रोका जा सकता इन्हें तीरों की बरसात से
ये नए युग के सौदागर हैं बेचना और ख़रीदना नहीं केवल छीनना जानते हैं ये कभी सामने नहीं आते रहते हैं कहीं दूर समन्दर के इस पार या उस पार
बस सामने आती हैं इनकी आकाँक्षाएँ योजनाएँ हवस
सभी कानून सारे कारिन्दे पूरी सरकार और समूची फ़ौज इनकी है
ये नए युग के सौदागर हैं हम खेर[1] काटते रहे इन्होंने पूरा जंगल काट डाला हम बृंगा[2] जलाते रहे इन्होंने समूचा गाँव जला दिया ।
