मेरे प्यारे सुकुमार गधे! जग पड़ा दुपहरी में सुनकर मैं तेरी मधुर पुकार गधे! मेरे प्यारे सुकुमार गधे!
तन-मन गूंजा-गूंजा मकान, कमरे की गूंज़ीं दीवारें , लो ताम्र-लहरियां उठीं मेज पर रखे चाय के प्याले में! कितनी मीठी, कितनी मादक, स्वर, ताल, तान पर सधी हुई, आती है ध्वनि, जब गाते हो, मुख ऊंचा कर, आहें भर कर तो हिल जाते छायावादी कवि की वीणा के तार, गधे! मेरे प्यारे...!
तुम दूध, चांदनी, सुधा-स्नात, बिल्कुल कपास के गाले-से , हैं बाल बड़े ही स्पर्श सुखद, आंखों की उपमा किससे दूं ? वे कजरारे, आयत लोचन, दिल में गड़-गड़कर रह जाते, कुछ रस की, बेबस की बातें, जाने-अनजाने कह जाते, वे पानीदार कमानी-से, हैं 'श्वेत-स्याम-रतनार' गधे! मेरे प्यारे...!
हैं कान कमल-सम्पुट से थिर, नीलम से विजड़ित चारों खुर, मुख कुंद-इंदु-सा विमल कि नथुने भंवर-सदृश गंभीर तरल, तुम दूध नहाए-से सुंदर, प्रति अंग-अंग से तारक-दल ही झांक रहे हो निकल-निकल, हे फेनोज्ज्वल, हे श्वेत कमल, हे शुभ्र अमल, हिम-से उज्ज्वल, तेरी अनुपम सुंदरता का मैं सहस कलम ले करके भी गुणगान नहीं कर सकता हूं, फिर तेरे रूप-सरोवर का मैं कैसे पाऊं पार गधे! मेरे प्यारे...!
तुम अपने रूप-शील-गुण से अनजान बने रहते हो क्यों ? हे लात फेंकने में सकुशल! पगहा-बंधन सहते हो क्यों ? हे साधु, स्वयं को पहचानो, युग जाग गया, तुम भी जागो! मन की कायरता को त्यागो, रे, जागो, रे, जागो, जागो! इस भारत के धोबी-कुम्हार भी शासक पूंजीवादी हैं। तुम क्रांति करो लादी पटको! बर्तन फोड़ो, घर से भागो! हे प्रगतिशील युग के प्राणी तुम रचो नया संसार गधे! मेरे प्यारे...!

Gopal Prasad Vyas possessed the rare and difficult gift of using humor to speak profound truths. Born in 1915 near Govardhan in Mathura, his formal education was cut short by his active participation in the Indian independence movement. This early exposure to political struggle shaped his worldview, giving him a deep understanding of human nature and societal contradictions. He became a giant of Hasya Ras, the tradition of humorous and satirical poetry, writing verses that made audiences laugh before forcing them to confront their own hypocrisies. Collections like To Mein Kya Karoon and Ras Rasamrit showcase his ability to dissect social norms with sharp wit and absolute clarity. He was the visionary founder of the Rastriya Kavi Sammelan, an annual gathering at the Red Fort that brought poetry directly to the masses. Honored with the Padma Shri in 1965, Vyas lived until 2005, leaving behind a legacy that proves laughter is one of the most effective instruments of social critique.
