Kali

Paired Painting

Kali

This profound work captures the fierce and liberating energy of Goddess Kali, towering above the prostrate form of Lord Shiva upon a desolate cremation ground. Created during a time of intense nationalist awakening in Bengal, the artwork doubles as a commercial calendar or product advertisement for Kali Cigarettes, masterfully blending sacred devotion with indigenous Swadeshi enterprise. The borders are inscribed with Bengali text detailing the wares of the East India Cigarette Manufacturing Company, showcasing how spiritual imagery was woven seamlessly into the daily life and economic aspirations of the people. Goddess Kali, adorned with a garland of severed heads and holding a bloodstained scythe, embodies the ultimate conqueror of time and ego, offering supreme spiritual refuge to her devotees.
