Chitralekha

This profound work captures a tender, magical moment from classical Indian mythology, featuring the celestial artist and minister's daughter Chitralekha helping her dear friend, Princess Usha, identify a mysterious prince who has appeared in her dreams. Chitralekha, gifted with divine artistic abilities, paints portraits of various gods and kings to help Usha find her beloved, who is none other than Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Raja Ravi Varma imbues the scene with immense emotional resonance, blending Western academic realism with deeply rooted Indian narrative traditions. The intimacy between the two women, the warm glow of the chamber, and the small sketches scattered on the floor invite viewers into an enchanted realm of longing, friendship, and divine destiny.
