चाहे सभी सुमन बिक जाएं चाहे ये उपवन बिक जाएं चाहे सौ फागुन बिक जाएं पर मैं गंध नहीं बेचूंगा- अपनी गंध नहीं बेचूंगा

जिस डाली ने गोद खिलाया जिस कोंपल ने दी अरुणाई लक्षमन जैसी चौकी देकर जिन कांटों ने जान बचाई इनको पहिला हक आता है चाहे मुझको नोचें तोडें चाहे जिस मालिन से मेरी पांखुरियों के रिश्ते जोडें

ओ मुझ पर मंडरानेवालों मेरा मोल लगानेवालों जो मेरा संस्कार बन गई वो सौगंध नहीं बेचूंगा अपनी गंध नहीं बेचूंगा- चाहे सभी सुमन बिक जाएं।

मौसम से क्या लेना मुझको ये तो आएगा-जाएगा दाता होगा तो दे देगा खाता होगा तो खाएगा कोमल भंवरों के सुर सरगम पतझारों का रोना-धोना मुझ पर क्या अंतर लाएगा पिचकारी का जादू-टोना ओ नीलम लगानेवालों पल-पल दाम बढानेवालों मैंने जो कर लिया स्वयं से वो अनुबंध नहीं बेचूंगा अपनी गंध नहीं बेचूंगा- चाहे सभी सुमन बिक जाएं।

मुझको मेरा अंत पता है पंखुरी-पंखुरी झर जाऊंगा लेकिन पहिले पवन-परी संग एक-एक के घर जाऊंगा भूल-चूक की माफी लेगी सबसे मेरी गंध कुमारी उस दिन ये मंडी समझेगी किसको कहते हैं खुद्दारी बिकने से बेहतर मर जाऊं अपनी माटी में झर जाऊं मन ने तन पर लगा दिया जो वो प्रतिबंध नहीं बेचूंगा अपनी गंध नहीं बेचूंगा- चाहे सभी सुमन बिक जाएं।

मुझसे ज्यादा अहं भरी है ये मेरी सौरभ अलबेली नहीं छूटती इस पगली से नीलगगन की खुली हवेली सूरज जिसका सर सहलाए उसके सर को नीचा कर दूं? ओ प्रबंध के विक्रेताओं महाकाव्य के ओ क्रेताओं ये व्यापार तुम्हीं को शुभ हो मुक्तक छंद नहीं बेचूंगा अपनी गंध नहीं बेचूंगा- चाहे सभी सुमन बिक जाएं।

Balkavi Bairagi lived a life that seamlessly integrated the idealism of literature with the difficult realities of public service. Born Nandram Das Bairagi in 1931 in the Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh, he earned the title Balkavi for composing remarkable poetry during his childhood. Although he rose to significant political heights, serving as a minister in the state government and a Member of Parliament, his soul remained entirely devoted to the written word. He wrote with an infectious optimism and a fierce moral clarity. Poems like Jhar Gaye Paat and Apni Gandh Nahi Bechoonga became legendary for their uncompromising stance on integrity and self respect. Bairagi was also a highly successful film lyricist, bringing literary dignity to cinema with unforgettable songs like Tu Chanda Main Chandni. He passed away in 2018, leaving behind a massive body of work that spans children's literature, political verse, and romantic lyricism. He was a true people's poet, choosing always to speak directly to the conscience of the common man.
