Chandrasen Virat

1936 · 1990s

Chandrasen Virat fundamentally reshaped the architecture of the Hindi Ghazal, proving that the form could carry the cultural nuances of the Hindi language with absolute grace. Born in 1936 in Madhya Pradesh, he emerged as a leading architect of the Navgeet movement and a prolific master of the Ghazal structure. He moved away from the traditional Urdu tropes of wine and the tavern, choosing instead to ground his couplets in the aesthetics of nature, Indian philosophy, and the domestic realities of the middle class. Across a vast body of published work, he demonstrated a meticulous command over meter and rhythm. Virat did not write to impress the literary elite. He wrote to map the delicate emotional landscape of the ordinary individual, ensuring that the Hindi Ghazal achieved a distinct and entirely independent identity.

Dushasan Vadh

Paired Painting

Dushasan Vadh

This poignant and dramatic artwork captures one of the most intense and emotionally charged moments of the Mahabharata war, the slaying of Dushasana by Bheema. Driven by the sacred vow to avenge the unspeakable humiliation suffered by Draupadi in the royal court, Bheema stands victorious and fierce on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The imagery evokes a profound sense of divine justice and moral retribution, reminding humanity that adharma, no matter how powerful it temporarily seems, ultimately faces a reckoning. The turbulent sky and the chaotic mass of soldiers in the background amplify the tragic grandeur of a fratricidal war that forever altered the spiritual landscape of Bharat.
